c)            In pairs, on your notebook, list the duties of each occupation from Activity - 4b (you may include other options). Highlight some positive and negative aspects of each one of them. Then, select three of them and justify your choices. Share your choices with your partner.

St. B: - I would prefer to be a journalist, because the  traffic jam in São Paulo is  awful and besides the price of the fuel is always too  high!

 

St. B: - I would prefer to be a Chef, because I love cooking and I want to learn about different cuisines around the world.

Book excerpt from “A Christmas Carol”, by Charles Dickens (1812-1870):

What is volunteerism?

The term ‘volunteerism’ is derived from the Latin word voluntas which means will, desire, wish, attitude, disposition or freedom. It is an activity which is governed by its own members and not by any outside force or external control. According to the Thesaurus free online dictionary, the term is related to the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward, or the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or services, as for charitable or community work. According to The UN, the volunteerism lets people and communities participate in their own growth. Through volunteering, citizens build their resilience, enhance their knowledge base and gain a sense of responsibility for their own community. Social co- hesion and trust is strengthened through individual and collective volunteer action, leading to sustai- nable outcomes for people, by people.

What is “Doctors Without Borders” (MSF)?

When MSF was first created in 1971, its original members had experienced working for the Red Cross. Since then, members of the organization operate in different loca- tions around the world, providing health care and support for threatening situations. Watch the video “A Day in the Frontline: Doctors Without Borders” and see how a day of a MSF’s volunteer is.
