TEXT 1
Book
excerpt from “A Christmas Carol”, by Charles Dickens (1812-1870):
“[…] I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round —
apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything
belonging to it can be apart from that — as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant team; the only
time I know of, in the long calendar of the year,
when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts
freely, and to think of people
below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not
another race of creatures bound on other journeys.” (A Christmas Carol, pgs. 10-11).
What
is volunteerism?
The term ‘volunteerism’ is derived from the Latin word voluntas which means will, desire, wish, attitude, disposition or freedom. It is an activity which is governed by its own members and not by any outside force or external control. According to the Thesaurus free online dictionary, the term is related to the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward, or the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or services, as for charitable or community work. According to The UN, the volunteerism lets people and communities participate in their own growth. Through volunteering, citizens build their resilience, enhance their knowledge base and gain a sense of responsibility for their own community. Social co- hesion and trust is strengthened through individual and collective volunteer action, leading to sustai- nable outcomes for people, by people.
